Holotype species: Sphondylothamnion multifidum (Hudson) Nägeli
Original publication and holotype designation: Nägeli, C. (1862 '1861'). Beiträge zur morphologie und systematik der Ceramiaceae. Sitzungsberichte der Königlichen Bayerischen Akademie der Wissenschaften zu München 1861(2): 297-415, 30 figs, 1 pl.
Description: Thallus prostrate and erect, ecorticate, apical cell transversely divided giving rise to multinucleate axial cells each bearing 2-4(6) determinate branchlets. Procarps subapical with 4-celled carpogonial branch on second (supporting cell) of 3 pericentral cells, 2 of which produce auxiliary cells. Carposporophytes with clavate carposporangia, fusion cell bi-lobed, involucre formed from sterile cells of procarp system. Spermatangial heads sessile on determinate branchlets. Tetrasporangia on lower cells of branchlets, tetrahedrally-divided.
