Streblocladia F.Schmitz, 1897
Holotype species: Streblocladia neglecta F.Schmitz
Currently accepted name for the type species: Streblocladia glomerulata (Montagne) Papenfuss
Original publication and holotype designation: Schmitz, F. & Falkenberg, P. (1897). Rhodomelaceae. In: Die natürlichen Pflanzenfamilien nebst ihren Gattungen und wichtigeren Arten insbesondere den Nutzpflanzen unter Mitwirkung zahlreicher hervorragender Fachgelehrten, Teil 1, Abteilung 2. (Engler, A. & Prantl, K. Eds), pp. 421-480. Leipzig: verlag von Wilhelm Engelmann.
Description: Thalli comprised of prostrate and upright branch systems in which exogenous branches are borne unilaterally on cylindrical to slightly flattened axes. Prostrate axes have rhizoids cut off from pericentral cells, usually from a proximal position; prostrate and erect branch apices similar in structure, monopodial (Hommersand 1963) and having the first pericentral cell in a segment cut off opposite the side on which lateral branches are formed; trichoblasts mostly absent but may be formed with gametangia. Pericentral cells 4-18 in different species; usually uncorticated, some species with cortication. Branching often at long intervals and lateral branches may be of a size equal to the axis, giving a pseudodichotomous appearance. Axes sometimes becoming spirally twisted. Gametangial branches distal, on adaxial side of axes but sometimes in lateral to abaxial positions. Procarpial branch with a terminal trichoblast; cystocarps with short stalks. Spermatangial capitula borne on trichoblasts or replacing them; cylindrical and often with a sterile apical cell. Tetrasporangia borne singly in each segment, occurring in long straight series in distal ends of branches, often with falcate apices.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera,
organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA)
and intended to be published in CD format.
These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above.
The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.
Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
