Holotype species: Leptonematella fasciculata (Reinke) P.C.Silva
Original publication and holotype designation: Silva, P.C. (1959). Remarks on algal nomenclature. II. Taxon 8: 60-64.
Description: Thalli forming tufts rarely more than 1 cm high, often epiphytic, consisting of a basal pseudodiscoid layer of branched radiating filaments and of rarely branched erect filaments with basal intercalary meristem. Cells of erect filaments barrel-shaped to rectangular and densely filled with plastids. Reproductive organs are rare elongate-pyriform to ovate unilocular sporangia formed on stalk cells laterally at the base of erect filaments and plurilocular sporangia formed by subdivision of terminal or intercalary cells of the erect filaments. Phaeophycean hairs absent. Life history direct from both plurilocular and unilocular sporangia. Distributed in arctic to warm-temperate waters of both hemispheres.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera,
organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA)
and intended to be published in CD format.
These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above.
The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.
Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
