Description: Foliose, elliptical to orbiculate, with or without a short stipe. Margin entire, lobed or dentate. Medulla of loosely interwoven filaments. Rhizoidal filaments developing from inner cortex. Cortex of anticlinal files of spherical to elliptical to fusiform cells, progressively smaller toward cuticle. Secondary pit connections present. Female reproductive structures in ampullae, which can be branched to three orders. Carpogonium terminating a 2-celled branch on primary ampullar filament. Fertilized carpogonium fusing with hypogynous cell and generating numerous nonseptate connecting filaments, each of which fuses with an auxiliary cell in a separate ampulla. A single gonimoblast initial develops outwardly. Cystocarp of many small carposporangia. Pericarp produced from lateral filaments dervied from ampullar filaments and surrounding cortical cells. Carpostome absent. Spermatangia undescribed. Tetrasporophyte isomorphic. Tetrasporangia cruciate, attached subbasally in intermediate cortical layer, scattered over both surfaces of the thallus.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
