Description: Subcylindrical to flat, of uniform width (relatively narrow), irregular constrictions sometimes present. Dichotomously to irregularly branched. Margins entire or with pinnate club-shaped or bifurcate branchlets. Medulla filamentous. Inner cortical cells and some medullary cells stellate. Other cortical cells isodiametric, elliptical to fusiform, progressively smaller toward cuticle. Ampullae with up to five orders of branches. Cells of carpogonial ampullae larger than those of auxiliary ampullae, which are more profusely branched. Carpogonial branch 2-celled, on primary ampullar filament. Auxiliary cell in separate ampulla, intercalary in primary or basal in secondary filament. A single, outwardly directed gonimoblast initial. Auxiliary fusion cell present. Carpostome absent. Pericarp of ampullar, inner cortical and medullary cells. Cystocarp compact, with many small carposporangia. Spermatangia undescribed. Tetrasporophyte isomorphic. Tetrasporangia cruciate, attached subbasally in intermediate cortical layer, in a nemathecium, which may or may not be elevated above surrounding cortex.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
