Titanophora (J.Agardh) Feldmann, 1942
Holotype species: Titanophora pikeana (Dickie) Feldmann
Original publication and holotype designation: Feldmann, J. (1942). Remarque sur les Némastomacées. Bulletin de la Société Botanique de France 89: 104-113, 1 fig.
Description: Thallus (gametophyte) erect or decumbent, with a single discoid holdfast and often several secondary attachments, slightly mucilaginous and soft when fresh but drying firm, lightly calcified, blade-like or frondose, the branch widths varying greatly; branch margins simple or cleft and dissected. Structure multiaxial; medulla of loosely interwoven filaments, grading to a cortex of anticlinal branched pigmented filaments. Vesicular cells usually present, intercalary in the inner cortex, ovoid to elongate. Calcification restricted to the medulla, occurring as needle-like extracellular deposits. Spermatangia formed on outer cortical cells. Carpogonial branches 2- or 3-celled; septate connecting filaments transferring diploid nuclei to remote auxiliary cells, growing on to diploidise further auxiliary cells. Cystocarps immersed in the thallus at maturity, surrounded by lax involucral filaments. Tetrasporophytes unknown.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera,
organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA)
and intended to be published in CD format.
These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above.
The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.
Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
