Description: Thallus to 4(-8) cm high, firm, prostrate below, flattened, sympodially and pinnately branched, composed of segments representing growth phases marked by constrictions in thallus. Axial cells each bearing 3(-4) determinate branchlets each several times tri-(or di-) chotomously branched with outer cells cohering in gelatinous sheath. Rhizoidal cortication lacking except in lower, prostrate thallus. Procarp and carposporophyte as in Crouania with 4-celled carpogonial branch on large supporting cell near branch apex. Auxiliary cell, cut off from supporting cell, giving rise to carposporophyte with several successive rounded groups of carposporangia surrounded by upward elongation of branchlets from axial cells below. Spermatangia terminal on outermost cells of determinate branchlets. Tetrasporangia, sessile, successively developed on basal cells of branchlets, tetrahedrally-divided.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
