Description: Thallus erect or partly decumbent, terete, irregularly branched, spongiose. Axes lightly to densely corticated, or ecorticate, bearing irregular or distichous lateral branches, with whorls of 4 equal branches from each axial cell. Vesicular cells present or absent. Cells uninucleate. Spermatangia terminal on ultimate cells of whorl branches. Procarps borne on basal cell of whorl branches. Diploidised auxiliary cell cutting off an upper cell that divides and produces several gonimolobes that mature in sequence, with all cells becoming carposporangia; lacking involucres but protected by enlarged adjacent whorl branches. Tetrasporangia borne near the base or in the mid-section of whorl branches, sessile, tetrahedrally divided.
