Zellera G.Martens, 1868
Holotype species: Zellera tawallina G.Martens
Original publication and holotype designation: Martens, G. von (1868 '1866'). Die Tange. Die Preussische Expedition nach Ost-Asien. Nach amtlichen Quellen. Botanischer Theil. pp. 1-152, pls I-VII. Berlin: Verlag de Königlichen Geheimen Ober-Hofbuchdruckerei (R.Y. Decker).
Description: Thallus erect, arising in clusters from a stupose base, with a curved terete stipe/midrib bearing membranous denticulate alae (wings) and an upper net-like portion formed from the anstomosing of up to 4 orders of branching. Lateral branches abaxial in origin, arising perpendicularly from the convex surface of the bearing branch, leaf-like with denticulate margins. Structure with a prominent apical cell and lateral pericentral cells cut off before transverse pericentral cells, the latter not forming until 8 or 9 segments from the apex. Second-order cell rows mostly bearing third-order rows, the initials of which all reaching the blade margin. Spermatangia in sori, forming discrete randomly arranged patches on the alae of higher order blades. Carpogonial branches borne on both sides of the thallus. Cystocarps sessile on upper branches, ostiolate. Tetrasporangia in sori on free ultimate blades, forming a thick central region. Sporangia borne on cortical cells, initially in 2 planes but ultimately lying in several planes.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera,
organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA)
and intended to be published in CD format.
These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above.
The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.
Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
