Membranella Hollenberg & I.A.Abbott, 1968
Holotype species: Membranella nitens Hollenberg & I.A.Abbott
Currently accepted name for the type species: Smithora naiadum (C.L.Anderson) Hollenberg
Original publication and holotype designation: Hollenberg, G.J. & Abbott, I.A. (1968). New species of marine algae from California. Canadian Journal of Botany 46: 1235-1251, 14 figs.
Description: Several monostromatic blades (8-25 mm tall) arise from a cushion-shaped base. Basal cells lack rhizoids. Each cell contains a single, stellate chloroplast with central pyrenoid. Pit plugs absent and growth is diffuse. Asexual reproduction by monospores (?). Monosporangium formed by an unequal cytokinesis of a vegetative cell with the larger of the two cells differentiating into the monosporangium [note: this is unlike the typical mode of monosporangium formation in the Erythropeltidaceae where it is the smaller of the two cells that becomes the monosporangium] which releases a single monospore. Monosporangia form along marginal parts of the blade or on small, protuberant, marginal sori. Following monospore release clear margins are persistant. Sexual reproduction unknown. Epiphytic on Egregia. This genus is known only from the type locality and nearby sites on the Monterey Peninsula, California.

Taxonomic status: This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Smithora.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera,
organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA)
and intended to be published in CD format.
These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above.
The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.
Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
