Description: Digitate clusters of soft, gelatinous lobes, usually atop an erect, cartilaginous, perennial stalk. Stalk and lobes of pseudodichotomous filaments. Filaments of lobes cross-linked by direct cell fusions. Cortical cells bullet-shaped. Hairs present. Gametophytes monoecious or dioecious. Carpogonium terminating a long, adventitious filament with proximal, unbranched, sterile laterals. Fertilized carpogonium contacting cells below it, with connecting filaments arising from this process. Connecting filaments contacting differentiated auxiliary cells in separate adventitiously produced branches. Two or three additional connecting filaments, then two or three gonimoblast initials produced from connecting filament after fusion with auxiliary cell. Cystocarps compact, embedded in thallus, almost all cells maturing into carposporangia. Spermatangia forming whorls around short lateral branches or at ends of cortical filaments. Tetrasporophyte isomorphic. Tetrasporangia cruciate, attached basally to cortical cells. New tetrasporangia regenerating from subtending cortical cells within walls of released tetrasporangia.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
