Description: The adult thallus is a monostromatic blade with a short, probably solid stipe. The foliose thallus is provided with a short tap approximately opposite to the stipe. This peculiar morphology in a brown alga is the result of the formation of a longitudinal slit in a partly hollow parenchymatous thallus. The macrothallus is initially a uniseriate filament becoming parenchymatous by longitudinal and transverse divisions; these divisions are localized to the median part of the young macrothallus. This part eventually becomes hollow and splits. Only unilocular sporangia are known. True phaeophycean hairs as well as the life history unknown. This species is restricted to colder waters in the North Atlantic, the Arctic coasts of North America and Asia, and Alaska (Wynne and others 1982).

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
