Yamadaella I.A.Abbott, 1970
Holotype species: Yamadaella caenomyce (Decaisne) I.A.Abbott
Original publication and holotype designation: Abbott, I.A. (1970). Yamadaella, a new genus in the Nemaliales (Rhodophyta). Phycologia 9(2): 115-123, 9 figs.
Description: Thalli (gametophytes) epilithic, dichotomously to irregularly branched, attached to the substratum by a discoid holdfast and several secondary holdfasts. Axes terete, mostly of uniform diameter with attenuate apices, calcified, calcification confined to the cortical filaments. Structure multiaxial, medulla of longitudinal filaments, cortex of pseudodichotomously divided anticlinal filaments with occasional rhizoidal filaments from basal cells. Apical cells of cortical filaments wedge-shaped or clavate, proximal cells pyriform, lower cells cylindrical. Monoecious. Spermatangia in sori, borne singly or in pairs on paired or verticillate one-celled branches arising on penultimate cells of cortical filaments. Carpogonial branch borne on the basal cell of a cortical filament in a distal position adjacent to the vegetative cells of the subsequent dichotomy, three-celled. Following presumed fertilization zygote cutting of several lateral gonimoblast initials, forming diffuse branch systems with terminal carposporangia. Carposporangia quadripartite, with cruciately or decussately arranged spores, or undivided. Gonimoblast filaments of mature cystocarps intermingling with cortical filaments. Fusion cells formed from cells of the carpogonial branch. Tetrasporophyte unknown.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera,
organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA)
and intended to be published in CD format.
These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above.
The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.
Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
