Description: Thalli erect from a rhizomatous holdfast, up to 20 cm tall, stiff branches often densely arranged; branches polysiphonous, cylindrical, triangular or flattened in section, with 6-9 pericentral cells, thickly corticated. Determinate branchlets on most segments, simple to pinnate, alternately arranged, on branch angles; distichously arranged if flattened; some ultimate branchlets may be spine-like. Branch apices with deciduous trichoblasts in 1/2 or 1/3 arrangement on every second segment; polysiphonous branches develop on proximal segment of trichoblast. Reproductive structures on determinate lateral branchlets. Tetrasporangia on ultimate adventitious branchlets, sometimes clustered in axils of branchlets. 1 per segment in a spiral series, often distorting the segment. Procarps on 2nd segment of trichoblast; cystocarps ovoid, often appearing to terminate short branchlets. Spermatangial capitula replacing trichoblasts, ovate, foliose, with sterile marginal cells.

Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera,
organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA)
and intended to be published in CD format.
These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above.
The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.
Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
