Anthophycus Kützing, 1849
Holotype species: Anthophycus longifolius (Turner) Kützing
Original publication and holotype designation: Kützing, F.T. (1849). Species algarum. pp. [i]-vi, [1]-922. Lipsiae [Leipzig]: F.A. Brockhaus.
Description: To 1m or more in length, with conical holdfast producing 1 to several perennial main axes (to 18 cm), foliose when young, becoming terete. Primary laterals to 60 cm long, 0.5 to 4.5 cm wide, regularly or irregularly serrated, foliose, strongly compressed with an obvious midrib, arising distichously from the main axis margin (branching pattern obscured in older plants). Several primary laterals produced annually leaving stumps to 2 mm long. Several of the larger subtending laterals bear a single ovoid vesicle, proximally. Growth from a 3-sided apical cell in a funnel-shaped apical pit. Fertile secondary laterals produce systems of branched, narrow terete axes, in the axils of subtending laterals, bearing clusters of short (to 3 mm) terete elongate receptacles. Plants dioecious, with one egg produced per oogonium.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera,
organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA)
and intended to be published in CD format.
These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above.
The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.
Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
