Description: Thalli polysiphonous, cylindrical, with both prostrate and erect branch systems; prostrate system attached by rhizoids often from proximal ends of ventral pericentrals, not cut off in some species; rhizoids sometimes in groups, arising from pericentrals on the same segment (Wynne 1985). Erect branches up to 15 cm long, exogenously forming radially arranged branchlets, these branchlets becoming bilaterally arranged in more proximal regions. Growth monopodial, often with abaxial determinate laterals overtopping main branch apex; branchlets formed in regular sequence but usually not on every segment, in some species short determinate branchlets clothe axes. Some species with determinate laterals having monosiphonous apices; trichoblasts not present on vegetative axes. 4-16 pericentral cells, sometimes a variable number on the same plant, uncorticated. Reproductive branches replacing determinate laterals. Tetrasporangia one per segment in straight, often short, series. Cystocarps spheroid to urceolate, on short stalks. Spermatangial capitula known for one species (Wynne 1985), narrow conical, with several apical sterile cells in an attenuating filament.

Taxonomic status: This name is of an entity that is currently accepted taxonomically.

Most recent taxonomic treatment adopted: Schneider, C.W. & Wynne, M.J. (2007). A synoptic review of the classification of red algal genera a half a century after Kylin's "Die Gattungen der Rhodophyceen". Botanica Marina 50: 197-249.

Comments: Type species from South Africa; other species from Galapagos Is., & Pacific Central America north to Alaska. Tayloriella is similar to Pterosiphonia but differs in having little or no congenital fusion of proximal branch segments with axes.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
