Description: Thallus erect, epilithic, to 1 m high and to 1,5 cm in diameter, simple to much branched depending on exposure. Medulla multi-stranded, each filament a monopodium terminated by an assimilatory filament. Meristematic region intercalary at the base of the terminal assimilatory filament and among the youngest laterals. Subcortical filaments extending radially from medulla towards cortex are repeatedly branched. Assimilatory filaments straight, simple or branched at base, consisting of cylindrical cells throughout. Unilocular sporangia large, ovoid to pyriform, borne at base of assimilatory filaments. Plurilocular sporangia uni- or biseriate simple or branched organs with lateral openings transformed from uppermost cells of assimilatory filaments. Phaeophycean hairs absent. Life history alternation of heteromorphic generations, with macroscopic sporophyte and microscopic "streblonematoid" dioecious gametophytes producing isogametes in simple few-celled uniseriate gametangia. Sexual life history was not found in all species or strains studied.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
