Original publication and holotype designation: Hollenberg, G.J. (1939). A morphological study of Amphlisiphonia a new member of the Rhodomelaceae. Bot Gazette 101: 380-390.
Description: Prostrate, dorsiventral, polysiphonous thalli, numerous axes, laterally adhaerant, forming a flat, lobed blade. Apices marginal and without trichoblasts, ventral surface with numerous unicellular rhizoids. 5 pericentral cells, uncorticated, 3 dorsal, 2 ventral; axes dichotomously branched forming indistinct veins. Lobes of thallus often overlapping adjacent ones. Reproductive regions marginal, often semi-erect. Tetrasporangia borne in marginal, radiating rows, 1 per segment. Gametangia borne in short fringing, radially orientated branchlets emerging from blade margins. Male capitula conical, with a monosiphonous stalk, radially arranged on branchlet in positions of trichoblasts. Procarpial branchlets polysiphonous, 2 segments long, with a single trichoblast. Cystocarps ovoid to spheroidal.
