Veleroa E.Y.Dawson, 1944
Holotype species: Veleroa subulata E.Y.Dawson
Original publication and holotype designation: Dawson, E.Y. (1944). The marine algae of the Gulf of California. Allan Hancock Pacific Expeditions 3(10): i-v, 189-432, pls 31-77.
Description: Thalli small, sparingly branched, monopodial and polysiphonous; attached by each segment with 4 pericentrals and a persistent pigmented trichoblast, borne in a 1/4 spiral on axis. Polysiphonous branches occasionally replace trichoblasts; trichoblasts unbranched or radially branched. Proximal main branches may have light cortication.
Procarps on the second segment of a trichoblast (Stewart 1989); advanced stages in cystocarp development and male plants unknown. Tetrasporangia in long spiral series (ca. 15) in distal segments of axes; developing one sporangium per segment but after maturity a second sporangium may be formed in some segments (Stewart 1989). Fertile tetrasporangial segments each bear a single, often simple, trichoblast.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera,
organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA)
and intended to be published in CD format.
These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above.
The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.
Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
