Holotype species: Hydropuntia urvillei Montagne
Currently accepted name for the type species: Gracilaria urvillei (Montagne) I.A.Abbott
Original publication and holotype designation: Montagne, [J.F.] C. (1842). Prodromus generum specierumque phycearum novarum, in itinere ad polum antarcticum...ab illustri Dumont d'Urville peracto collectarum, notis diagnosticis tantum huc evulgatarum, descriptionibus verĂ² fusioribus nec non iconibus analyticis iam iamque illustrandarum. pp. [1-]16. Parisiis [Paris]: apud Gide, editorem.
Description: Thalli crassullaceous to cartilaginous, with percurrent axes, slightly compressed, constricted at the nodes. Spermatangial conceptacles of the medullary type (i.e., Hydropuntia-type, including other definitions such as the Polycavernosa-type, and the Henriquesiana-type sensu Yamamoto [1984]), scattered, embedded in the cortex and outer medulla; young conceptacles oval, in deep pits surrounded by stretched subcortical cells, becoming lobed as they extend laterally and longitudinally. Cystocarps broad-based, often coming into close contact with the outer pericarp composed of tightly packed fusiform cells bearing short carposporangial chains at periphery. Tubular nutritive cells short, fusing with cells in the inner layer of the outer pericarp that in turn fuse forming tubular pericarp fusion cells in oblique or straight series; outer pericarp thick.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera,
organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA)
and intended to be published in CD format.
These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above.
The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.
Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
