Grallatoria M.A.Howe, 1920
Holotype species: Grallatoria reptans M.Howe
Original publication and holotype designation: Howe, M.A. (1920). Algae. In: The Bahama flora. (Britton, N.L. & Millspaugh, C.F. Eds), pp. 553-618. New York: published by the authors.
Description: Thallus filamentous, with prostrate and erect axes, ecorticate. Prostrate axial cells with 2 or 3 determinate or indeterminate lateral branches, attached to the substratum by straight multicellular haptera arising from basal cells of determinate laterals. Indeterminate laterals erect, arising on every second cell of prostrate axes, alternately branched with 1 branchlet per cell. Determinate laterals simple, erect, arising in opposite pairs on each axial cell. Spermatangia in pedicellate heads on lower cells of indeterminate branches. Carpogonial branches arising near apices of fertile axes that originate from basal cells of regular indeterminate laterals, the fertile axes oppositely branched below with periaxial cells smaller than remaining cells. Carpogonial branches 4-celled, curved, borne on periaxial supporting cell (the basal cell of a determinate branch) near the apex of fertile filament. Following presumed fertilisation 1 (possibly 2) auxiliary cell arises from the supporting cell. Carposporophytes terminating fertile branches, with numerous involucral filaments. Gonimoblast with a central placenta and terminal lachrymiform carposporangia. Tetrasporangia pedicellate, in axils, tetrahedrally divided.

Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera,
organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA)
and intended to be published in CD format.
These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above.
The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.
Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
