Description: Thallus a branched upright blade, up to 20 cm long, attached by a discoid holdfast. Branches flattened, up to 7 mm broad; formed exogenously from cortical cells at blade margins. Trichoblasts absent, apical cell exposed or in a shallow pit. Pericentral cells 4, each forming two flanking cells from each of which develops a row of alae cells. Each row of alae cells adhere laterally to the other rows, resulting in bilateral alae. Cortication sparse. Reproductive cells formed on branch surface; cystocarps adaxial, one per branch. Male capitula small flattened bladelets, spermatangia developing on all lateral cells on both faces of blade. Bladelet having a central row of sterile cells, a sterile tip and 2-3 rows of marginal sterile cells. Procarps formed on adaxial pericentral cells, a single cystocarp present on each fertile branchlet; pericarp developing after fertilization. Tetrasporangial stichidia with 5 pericentrals in the apex; tetrasporangia formed on 2nd and 3rd pericentrals forming two longitudinal rows.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
