Caepidium J.Agardh, 1882
Holotype species: Caepidium antarcticum J.Agardh
Original publication and holotype designation: Agardh, J.G. (1882). Till algernes systematik. Nya bidrag. (Andra afdelningen.). Lunds Universitets Års-Skrift, Afdelningen for Mathematik och Naturvetenskap 17(4): 1-134, 3 plates.
Description: Thallus epilithic in the intertidal zone. It consists of 3 morphological phases, which all have a pseudoparenchymatous anatomy: crust, bladder and erect axis. Crust a few cm in diameter, lobed, multistratose, formed by a loose medulla of long-celled filaments and a cortex of small and closely packed cells. Bladders arise from surface of the crust and become folded and convoluted as they extend. They may produce plurilocular organs in raised sori. Erect axes up to 15 cm high arise from cup-like depressions at the lobetips of the crust. They are similar to Chordaria consisting of a multistranded medulla surrounded by a cortex of assimilatory filaments (paraphyses) of 2-4 cells terminated by a larger and club-shaped cell. Meristematic activity is located apically at the base of a "fan" of cortical filaments. The erect axes may possess numerous thin lateral branches of the same anatomy. Unilocular sporangia are oval ad are formed on the erext axes. They are cut off from sub-cortical cells. Hyaline hairs present on prostrate and erect parts of thallus.Life history and precise systematic position of Caepidium are not known. Nelson (1982) concluded that despite of morphological similarities to Analipus both plants are generically distinct.

Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera,
organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA)
and intended to be published in CD format.
These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above.
The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.
Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
