Description: Plants uniseriate filamentous, ecorticate, in general of small dimensions, up to 10 mm high. Cells with one parietal chloroplast and a single pyrenoid, rarely several lobed parietal chloroplasts with one pyrenoid each. Life histories, where known, involving 2 free-living phases; generations isomorphic or slightly heteromorphic, but in some species markedly heteromorphic; gametophytes usually with a persistent spore, via bipolar germination producing a multicellular filamentous basal part on one side and one or a few erect axes on the other side; base remaining unicellular in a minority of species. Tetrasporophytes with a non-persistent spore producing a prostrate multicellular filamentous part, the latter giving rise to erect axes. Branching of erect axes irregular, secund or opposite. Occasional occurrence of multicellular pseudohairs. Sexual plants monoecious or dioecious. Spermatangia in clusters of various shapes. Carpogonia sessile or pedicellate, distinct carpogonial filament absent. Development of carposporophyte direct; fertilized carpogonium dividing transversely, developing small filamentous gonimoblasts with terminal carposporangia. Sterile involucre absent. Tetrasporangia lateral or terminal on axes and laterals, single or in clusters, cruciately divided. Monosporangia produced in both generations, and in many species the only known mode of reproduction. Worldwide, virtually exclusively marine, most diversified in tropical to warm temperate areas. Plants rarely epilithic, often epiphytic, also epizoic (semi-)endophytic and (semi-)endozoic. Emended by J.T. Harper & G.W. Saunders.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
