Antarctocolax Skottsberg, 1953
Holotype species: Antarctocolax lambii Skottsberg
Original publication and holotype designation: Skottsberg, C. (1953). On two collections of Antarctic marine algae. Arkiv für Botanik, ser. 2, 2: 531-566, 1 pl.

Description: Thalli minute, pulvinate, almost without pigment, growing on Picconiella, the pulvinate tissue anchored by filaments growing between the host's pericentral cells. Erect, unbranched, polysiphonous branches with 8-10 pericentrals produced from cushion; branches soon become corticated and produce reproductive structures. Reproductive branches erect, radiating from surface of pulvinate tissue. Male thalli with spermatangia produced from surface bearing cells that cover all but the proximal part of branch. Female branches with many procarps; several fertilized resulting in up to 8 cystocarps on fertile branch. Cystocarps spheroidal, partly sunken in branch. Tetrasporophytes with claviform branchlets up to 2 mm long, tetrasporangia borne beneath outer cortical cells in several spiral series over most of branch length.

Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera,
organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA)
and intended to be published in CD format.
These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above.
The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.
Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
