Description: Thallus of terete sparingly-branched axes with alternate laterals, often with shorter branch opposite or between longer branches. Each axial cell with whorl of 5 branchlets or 3 branchlets and 1 longer lateral branch, each branchlet consisting of several successive di- or tri-chotomous whorls and terminal hairs. Axes densely corticated with branched intertwined rhizoids. Gland cells on outer cells of branchlets. Procarps on 2-celled fertile branch on basal or second cell of branchlet, carpogonial branch 4-celled, auxiliary cell, cut off from supporting cell, forming pit-connection with axial cell and developing carposporophyte with rounded groups of carposporangia and involucral filaments. Spermatangia not recorded. Tetrasporangia on outer cells of branchlets, tetrahedrally-divided.Thallus of terete sparingly-branched axes with alternate laterals, often with shorter branch opposite or between longer branches. Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
