Description: Thalli erect, up to 30 cm long, with many slender branches, 0.5-1.5 mm wide giving rise to spirally arranged simple or bicuspid, flattened much branched ramuli, attached basally by recurved branchlets. Growth initiated by a short row of 8-12 apical cells, in a terminal invagination. Thallus 4 cells thick near apices becoming multistratose and subterete below. Cortical cells with numerous discoid chloroplasts. Phaeophycean hairs in tufts, sometimes very long and conspicuous. Sporangia solitary or in small groups, scattered down the central portion of branches, 80-120 mm in diameter, embedded in the thallus, producing 4 spores. Gametophytes unknown. Endemic to south-western, southern and south-eastern Australia.
