Mastigocoleus Lagerheim ex Bornet & Flahault, 1886
Holotype species: Mastigocoleus testarum Lagerheim ex Bornet & Flahault
Original publication and holotype designation: Bornet, É. & Flahault, C. (1886 '1887'). Revision des Nostocacées hétérocystées contenues dans les principaux herbiers de France (Troisième fragment). Annales des Sciences Naturelles, Botanique, Septième série 5: 51-129.
Description: Thallose - thallus composed of free, densely irregularly coiled, creeping filaments. Sheaths thin, firm, colorless, homogeneous. Trichomes always uniseriate, with cylindrical cells, not or slightly constricted at crosswalls, commonly irregularly laterally true-branched; branching of T-type; branches more or less short, 1-2-few-celled, terminated by apical, unipored heterocytes or long, continually tapering to the hair-like ends. Cells more or less isodiametric or longer than wide (especially in ends of branches), blue-green or pinkish. Heterocytes terminal at branches or lateral (laterally attached to trichomal cells), rarely intercalary, usually solitary, rarely in pairs. Akinetes missing. Cells divide crosswise and lengthwise before branching. Reproduction by hormogonia. Marine; creeping epilithic on calcareous stones and on the surface of shells of molluscs, distributed over the European, South African and American coasts of the temperate and subtropical zone. Data from freshwaters (M. testarum var. aquae-dulcis from rivers in Russia) needs revision. Revised description (Ramirez-Reinat & Garcia-Pichel 2012: 747).
