Apodochloris Komárek, 1959
Holotype species: Apodochloris simplicissima (Korshikov) Komárek
Original publication and holotype designation: Komárek, J. (1959). Apodochloris gen. nov. Preslia 31: 318-319.
Description: Solitary cells, often aggregated into clumps on substrata. Cells 7-50 x 3-15 &m, spherical, ovoid, pyriform and often slightly asymmetric. Cell walls smooth and initially thin, often becoming thicker with maturity. Cells uninucleate and often highly vacuolate; single chloroplast parietal and band shaped; pyrenoid single and lateral to basal. Asexual reproduction by zoospores, seldom by autospores; 4-32 per sporangium. Sporangia to 32 &m long with thick wall; spore release through apical, subapical or lateral tear. Zoospores ellipsoid, sometimes asymmetric, 6-13 x 2-3 &m with two equal, apical flagella 1.5 times cell length, two contractile vacuoles, and parietal, band-shaped chloroplast with pyrenoid and stigma; attachment by anterior end. Isogamous sexual reproduction reported for A. polymorpha. Gametes similar to zoospores, upon syngamy forming spherical, quadriflagellate planozygotes with two stigmata. Meiosis presumably on germination of zygote. Apodochloris mixed with various filamentous algae, endophytic in mucilage of Microcystis, inhabiting empty loricas of Dinobryon, or in soil; reported from Europe, Asia and North America. Genus recognized as synonym of Chlorococcum by some authors. Species variously assigned to Chlorococcum, Chlorochytrium and Tetracystis. Species distinguished based on features of cell size and habitat

Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera,
organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA)
and intended to be published in CD format.
These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above.
The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.
Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
