Description: Small colonies consisting of 2-4 mostly separated cells in filament-like arrangement, often becoming compound by adherence of daughter colonies. Cells embedded in yellowish or greenish mucilaginous envelope with distinct stratification reflecting sequence of cell division. Cells oval to ellipsoid, after cell division pyriform, with rounded ends. Chloroplast single, parietal and cup-shaped, at most occupying one half of cell circumference, usually with pyrenoid. Reproduction suggested to occur by autospore-like structures. Multiplication of cells by transverse vegetative cell division. Method of sexual reproduction unknown. Dactylothece (sub)aerial, in humid localities, e.g. base of tree trunks, walls and greenhouses, particularly in temperate regions. Dactyolothece uncertain generic status, resulting from poor understanding of reproduction. Among others, it may represent mucilaginous growth stage of ulotrichalean algae such as Stichococcus or Geminella, or the chlorococcalean algae Coccomyxa or Palmogloea.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
