Description: Cells solitary, oval to ellipsoid, (5)-8-10 x (3.3)-4.5-5.5 µm, without a mucilaginous envelope, the poles of the cells with a single, straight spine, up to 55 µm in length, wide at the base and gradually attenuated to the apex. Chloroplast single, parietal, cup-shaped, with one pyrenoid. Asexual reproduction by autospores released by dissolution of the mother cell wall. Flagellated stages and sexual reproduction unknown. Diacanthos planktonic, reported from freshwater in Czechoslovakia, England, France, Hungary, Poland and Ukraine.
