Original publication and holotype designation: Fott, B. (1964). Oonephris, a new genus of coccoid green algae. Acta Universitatis Carolinae Biologica 134: 129-137.
Description: Cells solitary or in 2-4-8-(several)-celled colonies within the expanded mother cell wall, often with remnants of mother cell walls of previous generations. Cells ellipsoid, oval, or slightly reniform, 11-58 x 7-48 &m. Cell wall thick, sometimes stratified, smooth, with or without polar thickenings. Chloroplast of young cells stellate, with a central pyrenoid, later becoming reticulate and sometimes with more than one pyrenoid. Asexual reproduction by formation of 2-4-8-(16) autospores which may be temporarily retained within the mother cell walls. Sexual reproduction and flagellated stages unknown. Oonephris, benthic, periphytic, probably cosmopolitan.
