Palmellopsis Korshikov, 1953
Holotype species: Palmellopsis gelatinosa Korshikov
Original publication and holotype designation: Korshikov, A.A. (1953). Viznachnik prisnovodnihk vodorostey Ukrainsykoi RSR. Pidklas Protokokovi (Protococcineae). Bakuol'ni (Vacuolales) ta Protokokovi (Protococcales) [The Freshwater Algae of the Ukrainian SSR. Sub-Class Protococcineae. Vacuolales and Protococcales]. Vol. 5 pp. 439, 421 figures. Kyiv: Akademyy Nauk Ukrayins'koy RSR. [in Ukrainian]
Description: Microscopic amorphous colonies to several cm with 2-many cells dispersed or clustered 2s 4s or 8s in common mucilaginous envelope. Mucilage colorless and without apparent structure. Cells 5-18 µm in diameter, more or less spherical with smooth cell walls. Cells uninucleate with two apical contractile vacuoles. Chloroplast in vegetative cells single and cup- or urn-shaped with single pyrenoid surrounded by starch sheath; stigma absent. Asexual reproduction by autospores or zoospores and fragmentation of colonies. Zoospores 7-12.5 x 3.5-7.5 µm, with two equal, anterior flagella; cells pyriform, reniform or elliptical with small linear stigma either median to basal or anterior and basal to lateral pyrenoid; small papilla only described for P. gelatinosa. In culture zoospores of P. muralis formed within 24 h of transfer of cells from agar to liquid media and zoospores active for 1-3 h before losing flagella and secreting envelope. Sexual reproduction unknown. Palmellopsis in freshwater swamps or associated with sand or limestone; known distributions highly endemic with P. gelatinosa reported only from Europe and P. muralis and P. texensis reported only from Texas; latter two species available in culture from UTEX (strains 2254 and 1708). In culture plants green when young, but becoming brick red with age. Physiological attributes in culture including nitrogen and carbon nutrition examined in P. texensis. Ultrastructure of vegetative cells described for P. muralis. Species distinguished based on numbers of cells per colony and details of chloroplast morphology and pyrenoid location.

Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera,
organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA)
and intended to be published in CD format.
These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above.
The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.
Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
