Description: Plants unbranched and filamentous, uniseriate in basal portion and multiseriate above. Cells long and cylindrical near base, quadrate above where filament multiseriate. Cells uninucleate with single parietal chloroplast filling two thirds of cell and cells towards base contain several pyrenoids. Asexual reproduction by aplanospores and normally quadriflagellate zoospores formed in multiseriate portions. Single report of zoospores with 2-8, or more, flagella. Sexual reproduction unknown. Schizomeris found standing bodies of water; rarely reported. There has been no general acceptance of view that this genus is simply a growth form of Stigeoclonium. The taxonomic position of the genus has been the subject of much debate with opinions differing as to its correct placement. On ultrastructural grounds its affinities are with the Chaetophorales based on presence of phycoplast microtubules at cytokinesis and presence of plasmodesmata. Ultrastructure of flagellated stage has also been investigated.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
