Original publication and holotype designation: Fritsch, F.E. (1944). Cladophorella calcicola nov. gen. et sp., a terrestrial member of the Cladophorales. Annals of Botany 8(No. 30 / 31): 157-171, figs 1-4.

Description: Heterotrichous algae forming dense tufts 2-5 mm high. Horizontal filaments large celled with cells often detaching at septa, attached to substratum by elongate rhizoidal projections which are usually unbranched and aseptate. Erect axes with irregular branching and more or less cylindrical cells narrower than prostrate filaments. Chloroplast parietal and reticulate with numerous pyrenoids. Nuclei 8-12 per cell, up to 18 or more in akinetes. Asexual repruction by fragmentation, or akinetes with numerous large pyrenoids, formed terminally in a series or singly. Method of sexual reproduction unknown.

Taxonomic status: This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Wittrockiella.
Comments: Cladophorella originally described from calcareous rock fragments in humid hot-house in England, since reported from similar habitats in Bangladesh and from marine environment in New Zealand. This genus resembles Pithophora, Arnoldiella and Cladostoma in its akinete production
