Groenbladia Teiling, 1952
Lectotype species: Groenbladia neglecta (Raciborski) Teiling
Original publication: Teiling, E. (1952). Evolutionary studies on the shape of the cells and of the chloroplast in desmids. Botaniska Notiser 3: 264-306.
Type designated in: Guiry, M.D. (2013). Taxonomy and nomenclature of the Conjugatophyceae (=Zygnematophyceae). Algae. An International Journal of Algal Research 28: 1-29.
Description: Cells united at closely appressed truncate apices into short or long filaments, surrounded by narrow or broad gelatinous sheath. Cells elongate, cylindrical or narrowing toward ends, up to nine times longer than broad, with slight median constriction (isthmus). Transverse row of pores on each side of isthmus; pores elsewhere scattered. Chloroplast one per semicell, axial, band-shaped, with 1-8 pyrenoids. Nucleus in middle of cell between chloroplasts. Asexual reproduction not studies; cell division and semicell morphogenesis characteristic of Cosmarium-type desmids assumed (see Cosmarium). Yellowish, elliptical aplanospores recorded for G. neglecta. Filaments partially disintegrate during aplanospore formation. Sexual reproduction by conjugation known in two species. Gametangia become geniculate and develop broad conjugation tube in which gametes fuse. Mature zygospores quadrangular with round to acute corners, surrounded by conjugation tube and gametangial cell walls. Groenbladia cosmopolitan; usually in periphyton of acidic, oligotrophic lakes and ponds.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera,
organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA)
and intended to be published in CD format.
These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above.
The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.
Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
