Description: Cells small, compressed (biradiate), with deep median constriction (isthmus), united into short or long filaments. Cell ends with 4 small, rectangularly arranged granules. Some taxa with granules also on lateral margin and face of each semicell. One chloroplast per semicell, with central pyrenoid. Nucleus in isthmus. Asexual reproduction by cell division and new semicell morphogenesis typical of Cosmarium-type desmids (see Cosmarium); no detailed studies available. Mechanism for maintaining filamentous habit unknown; may involve remnants of primary wall, or mucilaginous pads associated with apical granules. Sexual reproduction known in two species; by conjugation of cells detached from filaments. Zygospores between gametangia, smooth-walled, spherical, oval or quadrangular. Three species of Teilingia cosmopolitan; usually in acidic, oligotrophic lakes and ponds.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
