Description: Cells solitary, elongate-cylindric with shallow median constriction (isthmus) where semicells overlap, and several whorls of mamillate protuberances, each bearing one or more short spines. Cell ends truncate and 2-4-furcate, usually with two spines on each apical process. One axial chloroplast per semicell, stellate in end view, with axial row of pyrenoids. Nucleus in isthmus. Asexual reproduction by cell division and new semicell morphogenesis typical of Cosmarium-type desmids (see Cosmarium). Chloroplast divides only after new semicell completed. Sexual reproduction by homothallic and heterothallic conjugation. Gametangia pair within mucilage envelope; become geniculate when conjugation papilla forms at isthmus. Gametes fuse between gametangia; mature zygospore spherical with long, furcate spines. Zygospores from heterothallic cross have fewer, stouter, more furcate spines than from homothallic cross. Zygospore germination by wide circular operculum. Meiosis after extrusion of germination vesicle, producing one gone with Cosmarium-like morphology. Triploceras semicell morphology formed by new semicells at next cell division, resulting in markedly asymmetric cells. Each cell then produces new Triploceras-type semicell (without mitosis) and the cosmarioid semicell is discarded. Triploceras verticillatum and T. gracile widespread, usually in acidic, oligotrophic lakes and ponds. T. splendens rare, known only from Malaysia and North Australia. C
