Description: Cells usually solitary, but known to form short or long filaments or aggregations of cells in common gelatinous matrix. Cells small to medium sized (18-96 µm long, 1.5-4 times longer than broad), elliptic to elongate-cylindric, straight or curved, with broadly rounded ends. Chloroplasts two per cell, axial, stellate in end view, each with large, often elongate pyrenoid. Nucleus at middle between chloroplasts. Cell wall continuous around protoplast, ultrastructurally two layered. Asexual reproduction by transverse cell division. Sexual reproduction by homothallic or heterothallic conjugation. Zygote forms in broad conjugation tube; may extend into both gametangia. Mature zygospores usually spherical to rectangular, smooth-walled or with spines or small papillae. Mesospore layer of C. splendida with large pits. Mature zygospores usually usually required for identification. Cylindrocystis coosmopolitan, in subaerial, acidic aquatic or bog habitats. C. brebissonii and C. crassa widely distributed.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
