Description: Cells solitary or in short filaments, elongate-cylindric (200-427 um long, up to 28 times longer than broad), with truncate ends. Cell wall with scattered granules. Chloroplasts 2 or 3 narrow, parietal, spiralling bands per cell with many pyrenoids. Asexual reproduction presumed only by transverse cell division. Sexual reproduction by conjugation. Gametangia become strongly bent (geniculate) before narrow conjugation tube forms. Zygote spherical, smooth-walled in conjugation tube. Genicularia rarely collected, reported from Eurasian and North American acidic, soft-water habitats.
