Description: Cells solitary or in short filaments, medium sized to large (48-759 um long), elongate-cylindric to elongate fusiform (length 7-40 times width), with truncate ends. Cell wall smooth or with scattered granules, setae or spines; wall in some species with girdle-bands. Ultrastructurally, cell wall two-layered: an outer perforated layer (including any granules or spines), and an inner, more or less continuous, layer. Chloroplasts 1-2 per cell, axial ribbon-like with row of up to 16 pyrenoids. Nucleus in middle, beside chloroplast, or between chloroplasts if two present. Asexual reproduction by transverse cell division. Sexual reproduction by conjugation known for 3 species. Gametangia geniculate before narrow conjugation tube forms. Zygospores in conjugation tube, spherical, smooth-walled. Gonatozygon cosmopolitan, in acidic, oligotrophic lakes and ponds, or in Sphagnum bogs.
