Wollea Bornet & Flahault, 1886
Holotype species: Wollea saccata Bornet & Flahault
Original publication and holotype designation: Bornet, É. & Flahault, C. (1886 '1888'). Revision des Nostocacées hétérocystées contenues dans les principaux herbiers de France (quatrième et dernier fragment). Annales des Sciences Naturelles, Botanique, Septième Série 7: 177-262.
Description: Filamentous-colonial; colonies macroscopic, gelatinous, smooth on the surface, more or less cylindrical or subspherical, sometimes tube-like, living submersed. Trichomes of the same width along the whole length, more or less straight or slightly curved, uniseriate, not branched, not attenuated or widened at the ends, intensely constricted at crosswalls; terminal cells rounded; irregular or more or less parallel and densely arranged in common, diffluent mucilage. On the surface of colonies is the fine pelicula; sheaths around trichomes are absent. Heterocytes intercalary, solitary, causing probably the metameric structure of trichomes. Akinetes arise paraheterocytic, at both sides of heterocysts, in short series, spherical or oval. Cells divide only by crosswise binary fission. Reproduction by hormogonia. Freshwater species; the type-species is known from several localities (stagnant waters) in North America (firstly joined to the substrate, later free floating). The second species (W. bharadwajae) was described from pond and paddy field bottom in India.

Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera,
organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA)
and intended to be published in CD format.
These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above.
The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.
Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
