Phaeothamnion Lagerheim, 1884

Holotype species: Phaeothamnion confervicola Lagerheim

Original publication and holotype designation: [Wittrock, V.B. & Nordstedt, C.F.O.] (1884). Literatur-öfversigt [Literature review]. Algae aquae dulcis exsiccatae praecipue Scandinavicae quas adjectis algis marinis chlorophyllaceis et phycochromaceis.... Botaniska Notiser 1884: 121-128, un-numbered figs.

Description: Thallus forms branched filaments, by means of a basal cell fastened to other algae. Cells are cylindrical-barrel-shaped with layered, somewhat gelatinous walls. After cell division, the two new protoplasts secrete their own wall within the mother cell, and the upper one is extruded from the distal part of the mother cell. Branching takes place as sideways extrusion. The cell has one to several chloroplasts. Reproduction by swarmers, liberated through a porus in the mother cell wall. They have two heterokont flagella near the cell apex, and in some species there is a stigma. After settling, the swarmer forms the basal cell for a new plant. Palmelloid stages have been described, but are now thought to belong to Sphaeridiothrix. Stomatocysts have been described in one species (P. borzianum), but from a palmelloid stage. Epiphytic on other algae in freshwater ponds; widely distributed.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
