Original publication and holotype designation: Kociolek, J.P. & Stoermer, E.F. (1987). Ultrastructure of Cymbella sinuata and its allies (Bacillariophyceae), and their transfer to Reimeria, gen. nov. Systematic Botany 12(4): 451-459, 25 figs.

Description: Valves asymmetric to the longitudinal axis. Striae of one or two rows of puncta, C-shaped foramina present or absent. Raphe straight, expanded laterally. Central area unilateral, extending to the ventral margin. One dorsal stig- ma positioned near the proximal raphe ends, internal proximal raphe ends recurved in the same direction toward the apices, central nodule small. Apical pore fields located at the poles, restricted to the ventral margin and mantle or divided into two parts by the curvature of the external terminal end of the raphe, the two parts unequal in size, the smaller on the mantle of the valve apex, the larger on the ventral mantle.
