Didymogenes Schmidle, 1905
Holotype species: Didymogenes palatina Schmidle
Description: Thalli colonial, forming 2- or 4-celled coenobia, but 16-celled syncoenobia also described; surrounding mucilage envelope poorly developed. Cells in coenobium nearly parallel to crosswise, attached with their centers. Cells sigmoid, 4-18 x 1.2-5 µm, species with bristles up to 40 µm long, or without bristles. Bristle ultrastructure as in Micractinium. Cell walls smooth or with granules, these developed from fragments of mother cell wall. Cells uninucleate; chloroplast single with one pyrenoid. Asexual reproduction by autospores; 4-8 per sporangium, organized into 2- or 4-celled coenobia. Autospores released by rupture of mother cell wall, the remnants of which are attached to daughter cells. Sexual reproduction and flagellated stages unknown. Didymogenes planktonic in eutrophic freshwater; reported from Europe, Asia (Taiwan), Australia and USA. Genus previously placed in Scenedesmaceae. The description of Didymogenopsis is probably based on a division anomaly.

Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera,
organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA)
and intended to be published in CD format.
These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above.
The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.
Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
