Description: Thalli colonial, comprised of 2- many cells; thin mucilage envelope present around each pair of cells but not around colony as a whole. Thus colonies with highly irregular outlines representing multiple generations of autospores. Cells oval, 8-13 x 5-8 µm. Cell walls smooth but with slight polar thickenings. Cells uninucleate; chloroplasts parietal, single or double, each with a pyrenoid. Asexual reproduction by autospores, 2 per sporangium; spores released by swelling of parental cell wall; spores attached to gelatinized remnants. Flagellated cells and sexual reproduction unknown.

Taxonomic status: This name is of an entity that is currently accepted taxonomically.

Most recent taxonomic treatment adopted: John, D.M. & Tsarenko, P.M. (2002). Order Chlorococcales. In: The Freshwater Algal Flora of the British Isles. An identification guide to freshwater and terrestrial algae. (John, D.M., Whitton, B.A. & Brook, A.J. Eds), pp. 327-409. Cambridge: Cambridge University Press.

Comments: Lobocytis planktonic in ponds and lakes; more or less cosmopolitan but sporadic. Taxonomic concepts differ among various authors. Komárek & Fott (1983) consider L. dichotoma as a synonym of Dictyosphaerium planctonicum; because of priority the name of the type species of Lobocystis become L. planctonicum. Hindák (1977), however, considers these as species in separate genera and retains L. dichotoma as the name of the type species.

Original description: Alga colonial without a matrix. The cells are retained within the mother cell wall which swells in a divergent manner and which adheres to the rup- ture orifice of the previous cell generation. Cells contain one or two, parietal chloroplasts, each with a single pyrenoid. Reproduction autosporous.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
