Thamniochaete F.Gay, 1893
Holotype species: Thamniochaete huberi F.Gay
Original publication and holotype designation: Gay, F. (1893). Sur quelques algues de la flore de Montpellier. Bulletin de la Société Botanique de France. Actualités Botaniques session extraordinaire á Montpellier 40: CLXXIII-CLXXVIII.
Description: Plants forming a crust or growing as isolated uniseriate filaments, creeping or erect, with branches few and short. Cells uninucleate, cylindrical, each with parietal chloroplast and pyrenoid. Terminal cells, sometimes also lateral cells, bear long and often basally swollen hairs. Asexual reproduction by zoospores only known in one species. Zoospores ovoid or globose and biflagellate with 2 contactile vacuoles and stigma. Sexual reproduction unknown. Reported growing on stones and wood in moving water. Doubt attaches to placement of Thamniochaete aculeata in the genus due to the different form of its setae compared to type species. One species of Endoclonium, E. rivulare, is often placed in Thamniochaete. The type species of Endoclonium (E. chroolepiforme) is considered to be a form of Stigeoclonium.
