Glyphodesmis Greville, 1862
Holotype species: Glyphodesmis eximia Greville
Original publication and holotype designation: Greville, R.K. (1862). Descriptions of new and rare Diatoms. Series VII. Quarterly Journal of Microscopical Science, New Series, London 2: 231-236, pl. X.
Description: Cells colonial, forming chains; rectangular in girdle view. Plastids not observed. A common marine genus associated with sediments but habitat not well known. Valves elliptical to lanceolate; valve face with central hyaline raised area and sternum, from which radiate robust ribs, these being especially prominent internally; areolae large, occluded by cribra lying close to the outer surface. Complex linking spines occur on the ribs at the valve face/mantle junction and below these on the mantle is a single row of areolae; below this again is a plain or granulose margin. Apices with prominent ocelli, elevated above the valve surface; the plain rims of the ocelli are further elevated. Below each ocellus is an apical pore field, whose porelli tend to be larger than those of the ocellus. Rimoportulae absent. Cingulum of at least two copulae. The valvocopula appears finely granulose, while the second copula is even more finely granulose and has a row of advalvar pores.

Most recent taxonomic treatment adopted: Li, C.L., Ashworth, M.P., Witkowski, A., Dabek, P., Medlin, L.K., Kooistra, W.H.C.F., Sato, S., Zglobicka, I., Kurzydlowski, J., Theriot, E.C., Sabit, J.S.M., Khiyami, M.A., Mutwakil, M.H.Z, Sabit, M.J., Alharbi, N.S., Hajarah, N.H., Qing, S. & Jansen, R.K. (2015). New insights into Plagiogrammaceae (Bacillariophyta) based on multigene phylogenies and morphological characteristics with the description of a new benus and three new species. PLoS ONE 10(10): 1-26.
Comments: The taxon G. acus discussed by Fryxell & Miller (1978) does not have ocelli and its inclusion in Glyphodesmis must therefore be suspect. The possession of ocelli suggests that Glyphodesmis is not an araphid genus but possibly belongs in the Triceratiaceae. However, for the present we propose to leave it in the Plagiogrammaceae. The type of the genus has been studied in detail by Sullivan (1988).

Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera,
organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA)
and intended to be published in CD format.
These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above.
The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.
Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
