Pseudoamphiprora (Cleve) Cleve, 1894
Lectotype species: Pseudoamphiprora stauroptera (Bailey) Cleve
Original publication: Cleve, P.T. (1894). Synopsis of the naviculoid diatoms. Part I. Kongliga Svenska Vetenskapsakademiens Handlingar Series 4 26(2): 1-194, 5 pls.
Type designated in: Boyer, C.S. (1927). Synopsis of North American Diatomaceae, Supplement, Part 2. Naviculatae, Surirellatae. Proceedings of the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia 79: 229-583.
Description: Cells solitary; chromatophores two elongate bodies lying in valvar plane. Valves more or less lanceolate and convex. Axial area linear, narrow; raphe straight. Central area transapically dilated into a stauros which does not extend to the margin of the valve face, terminates at two longitudinal lines that proceed to the valve apices. Striae on valve face with transverse, punctate striae. Cingulum not complex. Rarely reported; broadly distributed in polar, temperate and tropical seas. This taxon, distinguished by the longitudinal lines that extend from the stauros to the apices, warrants further study.

Axial area indistinct, central area a transverse fascia. Striae nearly parallel, composed of iine puncta. They have entire margins and a deep, narrow sinus from the apices, below the median line. Their substance is thinner below the longitudinal lines.

Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera,
organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA)
and intended to be published in CD format.
These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above.
The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.
Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
