Description: Thalli comprised of microscopic solitary cells or two-celled coenobia. Cells fusiform, 18-45 µm long and 3-8 µm wide, the anterior pole (corresponding to flagellar pole of zoospore) tapering gradually to long bristle which bears either a pair of leaf-like appendages or a number of bristles. The posterior pole tapers gradually to a blunt tip. The leaf-like appendages 1-6 µm long and up to 2.3 µm wide stay in opposition at their base and give to the cell an anchor-like shape. High magnification of leaf-like appendages show many (up to 150) parallel curved ridges on one face. Cell walls smooth, generally covered with many processes (up to 24 µm long). Cells uninucleate; chloroplasts single with one pyrenoid. Reproduction by autospores or zoospores, with coenobium formation inside the mother cell wall. Spores released by dissolution of entire mother cell wall. Resting spores reported. Sexual reproduction unknown. Reproduction observed only in P. multiseta.

Taxonomic status: This name is of an entity that is currently accepted taxonomically.

Gender: This genus name is currently treated as feminine.

Most recent taxonomic treatment adopted: Tsarenko, P.M. (2011). Trebouxiophyceae. In: Algae of Ukraine: diversity, nomenclature, taxonomy, ecology and geography. Volume 3: Chlorophyta. (Tsarenko, P.M., Wasser, S.P. & Nevo, E. Eds), pp. 61-108. Ruggell: A.R.A. Gantner Verlag K.-G..

Comments: Paradoxia species are planktonic and rare; cosmopolitan in lakes and pools. Genus concept unclear. TEM observations show that structure of anterior appendages and other features are similar to Ankyra and Paradoxia. Genera seem very closely related; non coenobial Paradoxia placed by some authors in Ankyra. Close taxonomic relationship also expected between Paradoxia and Korshikoviella. Actinastrum guttula Playfair (1916) is probably representative of Paradoxia multiseta. Species distinguished based on protoplast shape, the presence/absence of a coenobium, and leaf-like appendages.

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
